Links to Dharma Centers and Teachers
The Drepung Loseling Institute
in Atlanta, Georgia is the North American seat of Drepung Loseling Monastery.
The Director is Geshe Lobsang Tenzin and the Institute invites many fine
resident teachers who stay for periods of a year or more. Lhading Rinpoche,
a very kind and knowledgeable Geshe, is currently in residence. In 2004
the DLI hosted Kyabje Locho Rinpoche, one of the most accomplished living
Vajrayana teachers, who gave many initiations during his visit to the
U.S. In the Spring of 2005 Kyabje Rizong Rinpoche visited to bestow the
empowerments of Chakrasamvara and Vajrayogini.
The New England area is blessed with a number of fine teachers and Buddhist
learning centers through which many study opportunities are available.
The Kurukulla Center in Medford,
Massachusetts is an FPMT center that
serves the Boston area. Geshe Tsulga is the resident teacher and a great
benefit to the students in the area. Please visit them whenever you can
as they offer a well-organized and comprehensive program.
The Chenrezig Center in
Middletown, Connecticut is another wonderful center and the resident teacher,
Namgyal Khensur Rinpoche, Geshe Wangdak, is the most senior Drepung Loseling
Geshe in the U.S. as well as the former abbot of the Dalai Lama’s
personal monastery.
Tibet House in New York also
organizes many wonderful events and teachings and offers a growing number
of residential retreats at its new Menla Center in the lower Catskill
region of New York. Dr. Robert Thurman is the Executive Director of Tibet
House and his many years of dedicated teaching and translation place him
at the core of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition in America. Tibet House
has a long list of excellent teachers.
Jewel Heart, based in Ann Arbor,
Michigan, is another fine organization under the leadership of Gehlek
Rinpoche, an incarnate Lama of Drepung Monastic University and a leading
teacher of Tibetan Buddhism to students in the West. It has chapters from
New York to California in the U.S. as well as centers in the Netherlands,
Singapore and Malaysia. In addition to the many teaching programs Jewel
Heart is a fine source for transcripts of various teachings and other
materials.
We at the Manjushri Institute encourage you to take advantage of these
opportunities and to visit and support these centers and teachers whenever
you can.

Links Concerned with Tibetan Buddhist Art
Many Dharma students in the Tibetan tradition find that
it does not take long to become interested in the religious and cultural
works of art. There are now many fine museums in the U.S. and abroad that
specialize in Tibetan Buddhist art and in this digital age much of the
work can be viewed on line. Himalayan
Art Resources of the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation is an excellent
place to start. Himalayan Art Resources is a virtual museum and international
research database containing over 20,000 images, 15,000 records, and over
1000 thematic sets. Through this link you can view works as nearby as
the Rubin
Museum of Art of New York City or as distant as the Zannabazar
Museum of Mongolia.
We will continue to add links to this Web site and we
invite you to share interesting links with us concerning Buddhist art,
books on Buddhist art that you have found especially valuable, and other
helpful resources.
The Manjushri Institute of Buddhist Studies also has
links to traditional Tibetan Buddhist artist and contemporary Western
Buddhit artists. We will soon be listing links to their work and contact
information for those interested in commissioning paintings or even the
art classes that they offer from time to time.
